About Melbourne School of Population and Global Health

The Melbourne School of Population Health was established in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences in 2001. It became the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in 2013. Approximately 300 academic and professional staff people work in the School and it’s partner agencies. The School’s total budget is in excess of $55m. There are approximately 120 higher degree research students (predominantly PhD).

About the Role

This position will be responsible for working in partnership with key stakeholders to drive activities that will lead to the sustainable elimination of trachoma by increasing facial cleanliness and improving environmental conditions to facilitate clean faces and hygiene.

The position will be based in Melbourne and work with partners and remote communities across the tri-state border region of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

You will work closely with the IEHU Team to determine the best strategies for ensuring the elimination of trachoma is sustained. The position will also work closely with Community Engagement Officers based in Alice Springs who will monitor the progress of trachoma elimination in priority communities across Central Australia.

This position will enable you to contribute to research translation with improvements in Indigenous eye health with genuine community outcome and benefits. It will be of national and international significance and provide an opportunity to break new ground in the systematic implementation of evidence-based sustainable public health strategies using health promotion as a model.

About You

You will be a natural self-starter with a proven ability to work to a high degree of independence. Your excellent communication, leadership and engagement skills will aid you to manage and advocate to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will further have:

  • Postgraduate degree in relevant disciplines and/or extensive experience in a related area
  • Highly developed understanding of issues related to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Experience and achievement in Education/Health Promotion/Community Development or project management with Aboriginal communities
  • Experience and understanding of working effectively with government agencies
